private residence, south carolina

The owners of this magnificent South Carolina home spent three years planning every detail of the construction, so when it came time to choose the rugs, they didn’t want an off the shelf solution.

“The linchpin was the living room rug, based on a diptych by Robert Delauney. ”

The couple and their interior designer, Christina Scharf, came to New York to work with me in creating a suite of eleven rugs. Because they are art lovers, the clients based their color selections on their extensive artwork collection.

The linchpin was the living room rug, based on a diptych by Robert Delauney. The 14’ 150 knot square rug was hand-knotted in Nepal of New Zealand wool and natural silk. The circles of the pattern worked well with the round ottomans and curved recliners. The rug in the entryway, “Butterscotch,” picks up the circular theme, and the strong black outlines of these elements tie this rug to the dining room’s “Prairie Flight” and the “Elemental” rug under the baby grand piano. Two companion pieces to “Butterscotch”—“Mango” and “Raspberry”—were used in other areas of the home.

For major projects such as this, Barbara Barran is available for on-site consultations.
